Randall "Randy" Boggs is the main antagonist of the 2001 Disney/Pixar animated filmMonsters, Inc. and a major antagonist in it's prequel, Monsters University. He is Sulley's arch-nemesis, Mr. Waternoose, and Fungus's former leader and boss, as well as an former employee at Monsters, Inc.

Monsters, Inc.[]

Randall is first seen scaring Mike, later he tries to beat Sulley but however he did become the New Top Scarer but failed when Sulley scare lot's of children, and also threatened his henchman/assistant. However, he also plans to revolutionize the scaring industry by kidnapping children.

When Sulley try to put Boo back in her room, Randall was already in Boo's room just to find Boo but didn't find her. Later, Randall went to the restroom, and Fungus told him about Boo, and his plans, Randall told Fungus that he will get the machine, and himself would take care of Boo. Randall later founds out that Mike, and Sulley are involved in his plans, and ask Mike where is Boo, and also told him about Boo's door. When Mike tries to prove Sulley that no one is in Boo's room, Randall accidentally (thought that he got Boo) kidnap Mike, Randall later found out that he kidnapped Mike instead of Boo but decided to not let him go, and test the scream extractor on him but Sulley, and Boo distracted Randall by removing the plug, and put Fungus on the seat, Later when Waternoose brought a door that takes Sulley, and Mike to Himalayas, it reveals that Waternoose is actually one of Randall's henchman, and Waternoose banished Sulley, and Mike but however Sulley came back to the monster world.

Back at the secret lair, Waternoose said that he should never trusted Randall with his plans, and because of him, he had to banished Sulley, and Mike but Randall said that he, and Waternoose won't need scarers, and Sulley got what he deserved but Waternoose repiles that Sulley was twice the scarer he will ever be which cause Randall to be angry. Randall, and Fungus later tested the scream extractor on Boo but however Sulley save Boo, and throw the scream extractor at Randall and his henchman, Waternoose later order Randall to stop Sulley but however given that Mike came back, Randall was hit by a snowball. Waternoose once again order Randall, and also said there can't be any withnesses to his plan, and Randall repiles there won't be.

When Celia (who is Mike's girlfriend) heard about Randall's evil scheme, she decided to help Mike, and Sulley by lying that Randall has broken the scare record but however Randall chases Mike, and Sulley into the factory door system, Randall try to capture Boo but failed, and was also banished to the human world where a woman beat up Randall (thinking he was a alligator).

Monsters University[]

In the film, Randall is first seen as a nice monster rather than a villain who was Mike's only friend, and roomate before he met Sulley.

They first met when Randall told his roomate that he also aiming to be a top scarer. Randall greets Mike quite happily while shaking his hands. Later in the film, Randall abandons Mike by joining Roar Omega Roar, and also tried to help them but however failed.

Personality[]

Randall used to be a kind monster but ever since Mike has been friends with Sulley, and Randall join Roar Omega Roar. Randall became evil.

Appearance[]

Randall is a purple monster who has 3 fronds, green eyes, four arms and legs as well blend in with his surrondings, making him invisible (as well being able to cling in walls). He can also camouflage like a chameleon.

Trivia[]

  • Randall is often thought to be the first film's secondary antagonist, and Mr. Waternoose's (former) right-hand man. The reason for this is probably because at one point, Waternoose order Randall a few times and Mike explains everything to Celia as he says "Waternoose has this secret plot" as if Randall was his henchman but However, this is false information as the film itself states Randall is the real mastermind, and Waternoose the real henchman several times (despite Waternoose ordering Randall a few times as well as Mike saying "Waternoose has this secret plot" as he could have just assumed).
    • One example is when Randall test the scream extractor on both Mike, and Boo, Randall can be seen making a evil grin which would mean he can't wait to succeeded his plans, Also when Sulley pull off the plug, Randall can be seen getting angry.
    • A another hint of Randall being the mastermind behind of the plot is that when Mike tries to make Fungus let him go, Fungus said that Randall told him that he is not allowed to fraternize with viticms of his plan (stating that the plan was Randall's, and not Watenoose's).
    • During Randall's first scene, When Randall said Shh? Shh? Ya hear that? it's the winds of change, a sound can be heard, and that sound is the same sound as the Scream Extractor which may mean that the sound that Randall was talking about was actually the scream extractor.
    • When Randall gets angry that he is not the top scarer, Fungus said maybe that he should align the scream intake valve which later foreshadow Randall planning to revolutionize the scaring industry by kidnapping children.
    • When the scarers are finished with scaring kids, Randall can be seen looking at the other scarers leaving which foreshadows that Randall plans to revolutionize the scaring industry by kidnapping children given that Randall said when everyone goes to lunch which means the scare floor will be empty.
    • When Randall said that when he succeeded his plan, he said that Sulley will be working for him which shows that he also plans to be the new CEO of Monsters, Inc given that CEOs holds authority of all workers (despite CEOs can also be henchman or minions).
    • Randall is seen ordering Fungus.
    • After banishing Mike, and Sulley, Mr. Waternoose himself admits that Randall is behind everything when he told Randall that he should never trust him with the plan, and also said that because of Randall, he had to banished Sulley but Randall tells Waternoose that with the scream extractor, they don't need scarers, and Sulley got what he deserved. Plus, Waternoose angrily repiles that he (Sulley) was twice the scarer Randall will ever be which cause Randall to growl lowly in anger.
    • When Sulley throws the scream extractor at Randall, and his henchman as well as Waternoose order Randall to stop Sulley, Randall was already enraged, and prepared to attack anyway.
    • After Randall briefly got knocked out by Sulley, when Waternoose ordered Randall once again, and also told him "there can't be any witnesses", Randall responded in a sinister way that "There won't be", which suggests that Randall was using Waternoose as a pawn, and also plans to betrayed, and kill him after Sulley, and Mike.
    • When Waternoose told Sulley that he, and Boo have seen too much, he meant too much of Randall's plan, and Plus, when Waternoose said that he had no choice to make things that way, This shows that Waternoose went along with Randall's plan to save the company, and when Waternoose said that he will kidnapp a thousand of children before he lets the company, and will silence anyone who gets in his way, he was doing it for Randall, and his plan.
    • Although most of Randall's villainous acts during the first film commited while being Mr. Waternoose's boss, Randall is much prominent as the villain in the film since Waternoose's antagonistic role is only revealed near the end. Also, Randall is much more evil than Mr. Watenoose since his actions, and dispositions are more overtly malicious, and he holds a personal grudge against the protagonists, unlike Waternoose, who would have preferred them not get invovled in Randall's plan, and thus, needs to be eliminated.
    • Randall is the most present villain in the first film, and also popular, and remembered a lot more than Waternoose.
    • Steve Buscemi's name is listed first before James Coburn in the villain list. otherwise, it probably would have been James Coburn first.
    • Because of Randall planning to succeed Sulley, and kidnap Boo from the the human world, he drove the plot of the film, and to mention he structured almost the whole plot of the film as well serving as the arch-enemy of Sulley.
    • Most of the adaptations books mention that the plan was Randall's, and even said that Waternoose was cahoots or working with him instead of saying that Waternoose was behind of the plan.
    • In the Disney As Told My Emoji episdoe which is based off the first film, Randall seem to be the main antagonist of the episode which is most likely based off that he is the main antagonist of Monsters, Inc.
    • Randall is featured in the tribute of Pixar Villains showing that he is main antagonist of Monsters, Inc.

  • In a early script for the first film, Mike was going to Randall's assistant instead of Fungus.
  • He shares the same first name, and many traits of Randall Weems from the Disney television series Recess. Both chracters are snealy, mean, and have the same posture.
  • For a long time, there have been rumors by fans stating that Randall was not evil, but just grouchy and tired (as there are bags under his eyes from lack of sleep) monster who wants the respect Sulley gets. However, most of these are not true as Randall has done many evil things in the first film as he tried to kill Sulley by strangling him, only to be stopped by a snowball being thrown at him by Mike and then getting punched out by Sulley. After waking up as the trio had escaped, he planned to kill Mr. Waternoose most likely to become Monsters Inc.'s new CEO/leader as well when he told him there cannot be withnesses to his plan.
  • For some reason, Randall is the only scarer in the first film that is referred by his first name on the Scarers' Leaderboard rather than his last name where all of the others are called by their last name. This implies at one point, Randall was actually going to be his last name rather than his first name.
  • In Monsters University, Randall is seen wearing glasses while in the original film, he doesn't. This is due to the fact that Randall learns that he cannot make clothing invisible, such as glasses, and discards them. This also explains why Randall is seen squinting in the original film since he cannot see well without glasses.
  • In the Monsters Inc. Storybook Collection, it reveals that Randall has a nephew named Rex, and that also indirectly means that Randall has a brother or sister.
  • According to the M.U website. Randall had very little control over his camouflaging abilities as a kid. Through MU the movie does not go into detail on this fact, it can be assumed that between the events of M.U and M.I, Randall had learned to assume near-perfect control over his abilities.
  • Above Randall's bed in Monsters University is a framed inspirational poster with words "The Winds of Change: Can you hear them? printed. This is a reference to his infamous quote from the first film.
  • Despite being banished in the first film, several video games set after Monsters, Inc., Randall now appears to back at work is no longer depicted as evil, Instead, he has apparently reformed but is still extremely devious and sneaky but these video games are non-canon.
    • And speaking of that, the cancelled sequel was actually going have Randall to be redeemed but this never happen due to the fact that Circle 7 Animation shunting down as well in early 2006, it was decided that Disney would be better off owning Pixar altogether rather than just the franchises.
  • One of the backgrounds Fungus used to demonstrate Randall's cloaking abilities is the cloud background that served as the wallpaper of Andy's bedroom in the first Davis residence seen in the first Toy Story film.
  • Randall serves as the the host of the PC game "Pinball Panic" which came as a bonus disc with select copies of the Monsters, Inc. 2-disc Collector's Edition DVD.
  • In international releases of Monsters University, Randall's cupcakes have smiley faces on them. This was to get over the language barrier (although the cupcakes have smiley faces on them on releases in English speaking language countries).
  • Randall is ranked #27 in the Top 30 Disney Villains.
  • Randall serves as a evil version of Sulley since...
    • Sulley is a hero while Randall is a villain.
    • Sulley is the main protagonist while Randall is the main antagonist.
    • Sulley tries to take Boo back to her door while Randall tries to kidnap Boo,
  • At one point, Randall threatens to put Fungus through the shredder, This is the shout-out to one of Steve Busecmi's charaters, who was once killed by a shredder in a another movie.
  • During the chase, Randall end up in on Earth in Paris which would be the setting of one of Pixar's later films, Ratatouille.
  • During Randall's defeat in the first film, The trailer in that scene was the same trailer that was seen in A Bug's Life, and not to mention, the Pizza Planet truck is there.
  • According to the creators, Randall wouldn't be appearing in the series Monsters at Work due to the door being destroyed/sealed off.
  • Randall's plan could result in the deaths or permanent mental trauma of the kidnapped children as the scream extractor can poteninally suffocate a child to death as it shows when Fungus was unable to breath when the machine is used on him.
